Project No. 1
Harley Chopper

How everything began:

Once I needed new piston rings for my Shovelhead and went to the W&W shop around the corner. Tony, the owner of the shop back then, told me he does not have the right rings for me, but he had an S&S Sidewinder kit for a big bore stroker that somebody ordered a couple years ago and never got it at the shop. He told me I can have the whole kit (cylinders, pistons, rings and the flywheels) for incredible 400.- CHF ( about 250$). I did not have to think about it for long and got the money from the bank.

I still had to find new piston rings for my shovel but I had a new plan for a bike in my mind!

That was back in 1995. Since the I collect parts for this project.

The decisions are made:

Frame: rigid stock style
Front end: Springer stock (gonna be black)
Rear wheel: 15"x4.5", 185x50 tire
Front wheel: 16"x3", 130x16" tire
Clutch: foot/suicide
Shifter: tank, stock style
Brakes: stock drum brakes
Handlebar: Ape on dog bones, controls inside
Primary: 3" Primo belt drive

Fat fucking tire in the back (185R15) on a 5½" stainless steel rim from Sweden. Star-hub and drum brake are model 66-69. The spokes are of course stainless steel too.

Engine: 92cci Generator-Shovel

Cases: S&S (Generator right side, alternator left side)
Cylinders, pistons: S&S big bore
Flywheels: S&S stroker
Heads: STD Shovel
Carb.: S&S Super E
Ignition: stock double point distributor/two Accell double coils for single fire (two plugs in each head)

The bike had to be finished by the time of our 'Starrahmentreffen' end of September this year (2001). To manage this I took three weeks of holiday prior to the party and put the bike together.

The first time I fired up the motor was the Saturday of the party after having already had a view beers the night before.....

.....and here is the result:

The bike is up and running!

That was a long story but finally ended up good. I really like the style!

And this is a cheap project after all. Most of the parts are used or abused parts found at different shops and swap meets.

e.g.: the frame I bought from Guy in Minneapolis in 1996 after my trip on my Pan across the states. Also the heads I bought used in Minneapolis. The springer front end I already had for several years and the tanks I bought for 40$ at Sven's shop.

Most of the small parts are hand made in my garage.

Reddy to go for a ride!!!
